The Rice University Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering invites applications for a tenure track assistant professor position in the broad area of Resilient Urban Systems. We seek candidates with deep foundational expertise and an interest in interdisciplinary research to enhance the resilience of future smart cities and infrastructure systems under chronic and acute stressors. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:
(1) natural hazards and climate impacts, including urban hydrology, water resources, coastal hydrodynamics, and coastal hazards adaptation and mitigation;
(2) smart/adaptive-systems and advanced sensing including computer vision, intelligent infrastructure, statistical learning, data analytics and data fusion in future cities;
(3) life-cycle engineering, and the assessment and design of resilient structures and systems; (4) complex systems modeling, socio-technical systems analysis, and topology optimization.
Consistent with the National Research Council’s report, Convergence: Facilitating Transdisciplinary Integration of Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Engineering, and Beyond, we are seeking candidates who have demonstrated success in interdisciplinary research groups working to enhance system resilience by integrating diverse expertise, tools and approaches in engineering, mathematics, and computational, natural, social and behavioral sciences to solve societal problems using a convergent approach. The successful candidate is expected to establish a rigorous, externally funded research program, teach core courses and develop undergraduate and graduate courses within their area of expertise, collaborate with other faculty, and be involved in service to the university and the broader scientific community. Furthermore, the successful candidate will have a strong commitment to teaching, advising, and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students from diverse backgrounds.
