Civil and environmental engineers play a vital role in society and care deeply about the world around them. They work across industries such as those associated with infrastructure, aerospace, energy, agriculture, water and chemicals. They work across sectors such as law, government, heath and education. Civil and environmental engineers work to improve and protect air, water, soil and biologic environments, and their research and efforts shape law and policy. They design all shapes and sizes - from planes, buildings, bridges and dams to nanoscale chemical, biological and solar solutions. They invent materials and processes to improve speed, strength, flexibility and durability. They apply civil and environmental engineering principles to solve world health issues and extend life through biomedical devices or develop modeling systems to predict and anticipate hazards like earthquakes and floods and their impacts in order create viable plans for urban development. Civil and environmental engineers tackle big problems facing our world, such as the provision of safe drinking water for all, sustainable infrastructure, and natural disaster preparedness and response.
Our degree programs challenge students to identify and understand the issues we are facing now and find new solutions for these and challenges we have not yet anticipated. A degree in civil and environmental engineering opens a world of opportunity to improve the world we live in and the one we will leave for future generations. We encourage all interested CEE students to explore our degrees and area thorugh CEVE 101, which is a highly recommended elective to introduce the essential topics and quantitative techniques in civil and environmental engineering and many CEE faculty in one quick course. The B.S. is designed for students who have an interest in one of the broad and diverse fields of civil and environmental engineering. The degree is designed to prepare students for a career in engineering and offers an innovative, challenging and flexible curriculum. More information.
The B.A. is designed to provide flexibility to students to study in the engineering track of their choice along with topics across any discipline at Rice University. More information.
The Minor in Energy and Water Sustainability provides students taking majors in CEE or other departments additional sustainable development principals. Sustainable development is a societal goal that challenges traditional ways of thinking and requires alternative approaches and solutions to balance environmental, economic, and social interests.
