Civil infrastructure is the backbone of the economy of any country. Buildings, power plants, bridges, and other living and transportation infrastructure are the essential lifelines needed to ensure sustainable development and economic growth of modern societies. During their lifetime civil infrastructure such as bridges, high-rise buildings, nuclear power plants, and offshore platforms are exposed to extreme natural and man-made hazards that have the potential to cause severe damage, life and economic losses.
The recurrence of extreme events such as earthquakes, hurricanes, flooding and explosions has significantly increased in recent years, posing a challenge to civil engineers to design sustainable and resilient structures to reduce the risks associated with disasters.
The career-focused Master of Civil and Environmental Engineering with a specialization in Civil Infrastructure aims to train civil engineers with the fundamental knowledge and tools needed to design sustainable and resilient structures to resist the effects of extreme natural and man-made events. The program also seeks to develop the expertise needed to assume leadership roles in industry.
