1. What is your research focus, and what made you interested in this work?
My research explores how origami principles can create structures with adaptable shapes and materials with unique mechanical properties. I’m particularly fascinated by the potential to design compact, deployable structures for applications like emergency shelters and space exploration. Another key aspect of my work involves tailoring mechanical properties, such as stiffness and negative Poisson’s ratio, through origami-inspired designs.
What drew me to this field is the beautiful connection between mechanics and geometry. I love how geometric principles can unlock so much potential in reimagining how we build structures and design materials. The idea of reinventing materials and structures for multifunctionality continues to inspire and drive my work.
2. Why do you enjoy being a part of the CEE community at Rice?
I love the strong sense of support and collaboration. Everyone is genuinely trying to help each other, which creates a tight-knit community where we all know one another. What I love the most about Rice is the people—they’re kind, caring, and always willing to lend a hand. It's also incredibly rewarding to see how engaged and enthusiastic the students are, which makes teaching and mentoring a fulfilling experience.
3. What is one of your favorite things about living in Houston?
One of my favorite things about living in Houston is the beautiful tree canopies that shade downtown streets. My husband and I often appreciate them while driving or walking around. Since moving here, we’ve really come to admire how amazing nature’s structures are, and these trees have become a special part of our experience in the city.
4. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?
When we are not working, my husband and I love to go scuba diving (whenever we can get to the ocean). At home, we enjoy spending time with friends, playing board games, and relaxing with our two cats.
Thank you for allowing us to learn more about you, Prof. Novelino! We’re so glad you are a part of the civil and environmental engineering community.
