1. Describe your research focus and/or current research project(s) you are working on.

My current research is focused on developing low-carbon and sustainable cementitious materials. I am interested in understanding the fundamental material properties and reaction kinetics of low to zero carbon cement alternatives. My background being in chemical and reaction engineering, I am interested developing novel reaction pathways for carbon capture and utilization via cement materials.

2. Why did you choose this area of research--what inspired you (e.g. a particular course, professor, event when you were younger, project, trip, etc.)?

My interest in this research began when helping to evaluate the carbon footprint of cement processing plant for an undergraduate team while working as a Research Associate in Bangladesh. My previous research was mainly on system scale environmental assessment of chemical processes and while doing so, I first read about the huge carbon emission from cement industries. I found that while there are decades of research available on the production and utilization of cements, there is very little focus on its impact on the environment and the dire need to radically reform the cement chemistry to mitigate the carbon emissions. My interest was specifically on reaction chemistry and kinetics of new cement production technologies/processes, and I was looking forward for a suitable opportunity which I found at Rice.

3. What would you like to pursue after graduation?

I am interested in further establishing myself as a scientist after my Ph.D. and hope to continue academic research.

4. What advice or insights do you have for those just beginning their graduate career in CEE at Rice, or for those interested in the program?

I think Rice CEE is a perfect place to start your graduate career. The advice I would give is something I wish I had given myself- the process of getting a Ph.D. is a process of growth. And sometimes it can be overwhelming. Patience and perseverance are essential, and also being kind to yourself. All the members of CEE community, beginning with faculty, staff and students are very friendly and helpful, and so it is important to always communicate.

5. What do you enjoy doing (hobbies or interests) when you're not working on your degree?

Aside from studies, I love to cook. I love my cat and love playing with him in my free time.
